Boys’ bathrooms
This is our second priority for a simple reason: the bathrooms will connect directly to the boys’ dormitory. The dormitory needs to come first, but we hope to build both together.
01 / Location
Nechishala Secondary School, Hwange District, Zimbabwe.02 / Purpose
Affordable, effective facilities that give students in the dormitory safe access to hygiene.03 / Approach
A practical structure built by the community, for the community, and designed to be replicated. The project story
01
The problem
The boys currently have latrines 200 metres from the dormitory and a rudimentary structure where they wash with a bucket. At night, going to the bathroom means walking those 200 metres in the dark and hoping not to meet anyone along the way.
02
Community support
Projects do not begin with our wishes; they emerge from conversations with the community. Together with community leaders and local partners, we define the project and share its costs. The community’s contribution is usually smaller and includes volunteer labour, locally made bricks and sand gathered near the site.
03
What we hope to build
Three toilets, three showers and two washbasins: a simple building that gives the boys what they need for daily hygiene. They too should be able to experience a shower and use toilets with a flush for the first time in their lives.
